LAST WILL and TESTAMENT

In the name of God, Amen-

I, Stephen Calkin, of Sharon, in the County of Litchfield, being weak in body and sensible that my great and last change draws near, but of perfect mind and understanding, do make, ordain, and appoint this to be my last will and testament.

First of all, I commend my soul to God, who gave it, in hopes of His mercy through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and my body to the earth, to be buried with a decent Christian burial, at the discretion of my executors, after named, not doubting but that I shall receive it again at the last day.

And, as touching the worldly goods and estate, wherewith it hath please God to bless me, my Will is to dispose of it in the following manner, my just debts and funeral expenses being first paid.

  • I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife, ELIZABETH, the privilege of living in and enjoying the kitchen, or north west room in the house, with so much privilege in the cellar and chamber as she needeth, with the privilege of the use of two chairs, my iron pot, and the hand irons, all these during the time that she continues to be my widow. I give to her my reddish pied two year old heifer, together with all the household stuff . . .

THE FOLLOWING WAS LEFT TO THE HEIRS:

  • Second son, JOSEPH, 3 acres of woodland

  • STEPHEN, ELIJAH, TIMOTHY, in equal partnership and quantity, all remainder of my South Mountain lot. EXCEPT what I have given by deed to my son AMOS (with whom I now reside), reserving liberty for Amos to pass and repass with teams and wood from his land across their land to the highway.

  • To my four sons STEPHEN, ELIJAH, JUSTUS, DAVID, and daughter, MARY, the whole of 100 pounds.

  • To son JUSTUS; 10 acres at the Pine Stump.

  • To daughter, MARY, my iron kettle and a brownish two year old heifer, and 4 sheep.

  • To my son AMOS, a black 3 year old heifer, my sorrel mare, my cart, and iron shod wheels, and one bed.

  • To my son DAVID, my working oxen.

Executor: Mr. James Pardee

In witness, whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the 28th day of May, A.D. 1781.

In my journey through life I have had good fortune and blessings to own land in Hebron, Lebanon, and Sharon. I have been a horse and cattle drover and owned a sloop named "Ann". In the days of the Revolution I was known to be an ardent Patriot.

The Good Lord enabled me to have two good wives who gave me ten children: Stephen, Joseph, Elijah, Justus, Reuben, Timothy, Elisha, Amos, David, and Mary, some of whom met their maker before I am to.
