April 10, 2008 (Sharon, CT) – The Sharon Historical Society is pleased to announce the premiere of the documentary film Visions of Iron, a 30-minute documentary depicting the story of the Salisbury Iron District. The premiere will be held at the Moviehouse in Millerton, NY on Sunday May 4, at 11 am. Admission is free and a reception will follow.

The project, initially begun in 2005, has been funded by an Anonymous Local Foundation, The Connecticut Humanities Council, Sharon Hospital, Salisbury Bank & Trust Company, Scott and Roxanne Bok, the Mary A. and John M. McCarthy Foundation, Mary Husted Silks & Betsey Husted Hallihan, Francoise A. Kelz, and a host of generous supporters.  The movie is directed by John E. Maher of JEM Films, and has been shot on location throughout Sharon, Salisbury, Canaan, Kent and even in Pennsylvania. Designed to bring the sights, sounds and scenes of the region-wide, nationally significant iron industry to life, historian Ed Kirby weaves the narrative thread through this complex story of iron making in the Salisbury Iron District, a geographic area that includes Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York states. Visions of Iron is the culmination of years of work piecing together the intricate network of business and social relationships that was the defining force of the region’s historic development.

Sharon native Ed Kirby is a retired educator whose interest in local history, geology and industrial archaeology spans many years. His dedication to the region’s industrial past has led to the preservation of several historic sites. The Sharon Historical Society is a museum and history center that serves as a community resource for dynamic family programs and compelling exhibitions inspired by an extensive archive that dates back to the region’s early settlers.

DVDs will be available for purchase at the movie premiere for $15 each. For further order information or general inquiries, contact the SHS at sharonhistoricalsociety@yahoo.com or via telephone at 860.364.5688.
