Why You Should Become a Member of The Sharon Historical Society

Welcome to Sharon! You may have noticed the stately brick home sitting next to the Hotchkiss Library on the Sharon Green. Few newcomers know that that building is the home to our community museum, the Sharon Historical Society, professionally staffed and featuring state-of-the-art facilities for collections care. The first priority at the SHS is to serve the needs of our nearly 400 members, some of which come from as far afield as Alaska. We have a large collection of photographs and Sharon memorabilia featured in changing exhibits, on our web site, and our Hallway Art Gallery showcases the talent of our stellar local and regional artists. Visit the historic Gay-Hoyt House and find a Discovery Room geared towards children from 2-12, a public computer with Internet access, WiFi connections, a comfy place to sit and relax, and a great place to hold meetings and get a hot cup of coffee weekday mornings!

Cemetery Walk 2006

One of the ways we keep in touch with our members is through the quarterly newsletter, Sharon Archives. We also have an ongoing commitment to bringing history to the community through an active publication program, and via our most recent endeavor, a half-hour documentary film called Visions of Iron. Our books, and a collection of books written by local authors, are for sale in our bookstore. Our latest publication, Book 2 of "Seldom Told Tales of Sharon" was released in October of 2008.

A major portion of our work involves children and families. Each year we present programs free of charge to children in the Sharon Day Care Center and to each of the K-8 classes at the Sharon Center School. Programs are developed in conjunction with the teachers to support teacher's educational goals. One of our favorite museum-school partnerships occurs each April. Working with the 7th grade advisors, the art teacher, local artists and involved parents, museum staff and students host the seventh grade art show and benefit sale to raise money for the class fund that covers expenses associated with field trips and graduation.

Traditionally, the weekend just prior to July 4th is the date of our summer fundraising event. Over the years we have presented such events as, "The Great Attic Classic, A Truly Splendid Tag Sale and Silent Auction", tours of historic gardens and homes, as well as "Sharon Artists and Beyond", a tour of 8 artists studios over two days. Always feel free to call 860-364-5688 for details or send us an e-mail to sharonhistoricalsociety@yahoo.com.

Over 80 volunteers gave hundreds of hours of service in 2008. Volunteers serve many functions- leading groups through local burying grounds on our annual cemetery tour, cataloguing photographs, or helping with fundraising events. We are proud that so many people have chosen to share their most precious commodity - time - on Historical Society projects.
