A Millennium Show - Sharon Voices 2000 to Open at SHS
There’s still time for your voice to be heard among Sharon Voices 200, the Museum’s latest year- long exhibit opening June 17. Sharon Voices 2000 will trace the history of Sharon through the voices of the town’s residents, past and present, young and old.
The exhibit will look at education, social and family life, artistic talent, clubs and fraternal organizations, the role of churches and the commercial life of the town over the years.
One of the fascinating people we will glimpse depicted in the exhibit is Madame Eckels, who opened a church in Sharon in the 1860s. On display will be pictures and photographs of the church and its site – later a favorite picnic spot for Sharonites, a prayer bench from the chapel, donated to the Society by Betty Scribner and the late Robert Scribner, and a painting that was originally hung behind the alter of the church, on loan from the Immaculate Conception Church of Amenia.
Getting ready for the new exhibit has been a big job and two young Hotchkiss students have spent the greater part of the spring spackling, sanding, taping and painting the display space. The two young women, Helen Lapedes and Eleanor Garretson, spend two afternoons a week as part of their school community service project. "I can honestly say," said director Liz Shapiro, "that this exhibit would not have happened without their efforts. We had a lot of fun dancing around the museum with paintbrushes in our hands!"
There will be an audio component of the display where visitors may listen to various townspeople speak about their life experiences. If you would like to participate in this audio program, please call or E-mail the museum.
An exhibit opening reception will be held on Friday, June 16, from 5-7 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Sharon Voices 2000 is designed for the entire family – all are invited and encouraged to attend!
