Past Programs
Mothers’ Day Tea
A Mothers’ Day Tea and Craft Program was thoroughly enjoyed by both generations! Before enjoying refreshments, the youngsters crafted presents to be given on Mother’s Day. Then everybody showed their best manners as tea and scones were served. Emily Post would have been impressed! Many thanks to helpers Allison Casey and Jane Perotti.
Heritage Garden Program
Over fifty people from all over New York and Connecticut attended the day-long Heritage Garden program given during the dormant days of winter past. Featured speakers included noted gardening writers Tovah Martin and May Brawley Hill, Garden Conservancy Director of Preservation Projects, William Noble, and Cynthia Rice, landscape architect and owner of Beardsley Gardens.
Interest of the audience was evident in the questions and discussions that carried right on through a lovely lunch and after each of the speaker’s presentations. The lively and informative workshop generated $1200 for the Society’s Garden and Landscape Design Fund.
Time Capsules at Sharon Center School
An after-hours Sharon Center School Enrichment program conducted by Kerry Keser, director of Holley House Museum and our own Liz Shapiro has been a huge success measured by the youngsters’ interest.
Another facet of the Society’s effort to involve young people, the Tuesday afternoon enrichment project introduced history by having the children make their own time capsules, including personal items that they felt represented a meaningful part of their lives and times.
"The imagination and depth of perception of their world was amazing. It’s heartening to meet kids like these," Liz said.
Another annual school visit to the Museum and the Hands-On children’s room this spring was made by the Sharon Center School fifth grade, who make a special study of Sharon’s role in the Civil War. After viewing vintage pictures of the town, the class takes a walking tour of the Green, observing and discussing the changes – an effective introduction to living, local history.
