April 15, 2008 (Sharon, CT) – On Saturday, April 26th, from 10 am through the mid-afternoon, join members of the Historic Sharon Burying Ground and the Sharon Historical Society as we learn from and work with cemetery restoration specialist Ruth Shapleigh-Brown to reset and clean our historic gravestones.
The day will begin with a lesson on uncovering those stones that have broken off and been buried in the dirt and covered with grass. Ms. Shapleigh-Brown, one of the primary organizers of the Connecticut Gravestone Network, will then teach participants how to lift and reset the stones in the ground.
"With the help of 15 able-bodies people, we could reset a dozen gravestones or more," says Shapleigh-Brown. This is labor intensive work, but there will be jobs and lessons for anyone interested in attending. Spray bottles and toothbrushes will be available for those who wish to work on cleaning lichen and other organic matter off the gravestones. Instruction will be provided. To register, e-mail sharonhistoricalsociety@yahoo.com or call the Sharon Historical Society at 860-364-5688. This workshop is sponsored by The Historic Sharon Burying Ground, Inc. Participants are asked to bring drinking water and a lunch.
